MAC Niterói
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói — MAC — is Oscar Niemeyer's flying-saucer museum, cantilevered over Guanabara Bay on the Niterói side. It opened in 1996 and is now one of the most photographed buildings in Brazil.
The rotating contemporary collection is worth a look, but the real exhibit is the building itself and the panorama back across the water at Rio — Sugarloaf, the bay, the skyline. Getting there is half the experience: the ferry crossing from Praça XV is the best cheap boat ride in the city.
Insider tips
- Go for the architecture and the bay views back toward Rio more than the art — that's what people remember.
- Time the ferry for late afternoon so you cross at golden hour.
- Entry is free on Wednesdays, and free any day if you arrive by bike.
Getting there
Take the Praça XV–Niterói ferry across the bay (about 15–20 minutes, and a sight in itself), then a short taxi or bus to the Mirante da Boa Viagem where the museum sits. You can also drive over the Rio–Niterói bridge.
Costs & hours
Around R$12 for adults (R$6 students and over-60s), free on Wednesdays. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30); closed Mondays. Prices change — check macniteroi.com.br before you go.

We can set up a car and driver for the day, or a private boat across the bay instead of the public ferry, and pair MAC with lunch in Niterói or Centro. Message Charlie and we'll plan the crossing.

Museu do Amanhã
The Museu do Amanhã — Museum of Tomorrow — is Santiago Calatrava's science museum on Praça Mauá, the centrepiece of Rio's reborn port district. The skeletal white structure reaches out over Guanabara Bay and runs on solar power and tidal cooling.
Inside, the exhibits walk you through the future of the planet — climate, population, sustainability — in a smart, interactive sequence. It pairs naturally with the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) next door and a walk along the Orla Conde waterfront.
Insider tips
- Buy a timed-entry ticket online to skip the queue.
- The building and the plaza are free to admire even without a ticket.
- Go early to beat the school groups; combine it with MAR on the same square.
Getting there
Take the VLT light rail to the Praça Mauá stop on the Centro waterfront. From the Zona Sul, ride the Metro to Carioca or Cinelândia and change to the VLT, or take a car straight to the Porto Maravilha district.
Costs & hours
Adult entry around R$40 (half R$20). Open Thursday to Tuesday, 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00); closed Wednesdays. Check museudoamanha.org.br for current pricing and any free days.

Theatro Municipal
The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is the city's Belle Époque opera house on Praça Floriano in Cinelândia, modelled on the Palais Garnier in Paris and opened in 1909. Marble, gilt, mosaic and a grand staircase — it's the most opulent room in the city.
You can come for a performance — opera, ballet, the symphony — or take the daytime guided tour to see the interior when it's quiet.
Insider tips
- If you only want to see the building, the guided tour beats buying a show ticket.
- Tour tickets are sold same-day from the box office, cash only, in limited slots — arrive early.
- Confirm the English- or Spanish-language tour day before you go; the schedule rotates.
Getting there
Metro Line 1 to Cinelândia station — the theatre is right at the exit on Praça Floriano, facing the same square as the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.
Costs & hours

The Real Gabinete Português de Leitura is a neo-Manueline reading room in Centro that looks built for a fantasy film — three storeys of carved Portuguese woodwork around a hall of some 350,000 antique books, lit by a red-and-white stained-glass skylight.
It's regularly named one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, it's free, and most visitors are surprised it isn't on every itinerary.

Insider tips
- Check mnba.gov.br or @museunacionaldebelasartes before you go — most of the collection is off-limits until the reopening.
- If it's closed, the Theatro Municipal and CCBB are a few steps away.
- It's on the same square as the opera house — easy to combine.

Cristo Redentor
Cristo Redentor — Christ the Redeemer — stands 38 metres tall on the Corcovado peak, arms open over the city, and it's the view that explains the whole of Rio: the beaches, the bay, Sugarloaf, the forest, all laid out below.
It's one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the most-visited sight in Rio de Janeiro. The classic way up is the Corcovado cog train through the Tijuca forest.
Insider tips
- Book a timed slot online in advance — same-day tickets often sell out.
- Go at opening (08:00) for clearer air and thinner crowds; midday haze and cloud are common.
- Check the weather before you commit to a slot — a clouded-over summit is the number-one letdown.
Getting there
The classic route is the Trem do Corcovado cog train from Estação Cosme Velho, Rua Cosme Velho 513. From the Zona Sul, take a taxi or the Metro to Largo do Machado and continue to Cosme Velho. Authorised vans run from Largo do Machado and Paineiras as a cheaper alternative.
Costs & hours
