Selva de Pedra.

Forty buildings, 2,251 apartments — Leblon's largest residential complex.

About the building

Selva de Pedra in brief.

Selva de Pedra is a 40-building, 2,251-apartment residential complex that occupies a substantial fraction of Leblon's inland blocks — one of the largest residential condominiums anywhere in Rio's South Zone, and the defining counterweight to Leblon's beachfront avenue stock. The complex is laid out around four dead-end internal streets that buffer it from through-traffic, with Praça Milton Campos at the geometric center as a shared green space.

Originally conceived as middle-class housing, Selva de Pedra has appreciated substantially over the decades and now trades as part of Leblon's broader high-end inventory. Inventory and HOA figures vary widely block-by-block — no single price band describes the complex — which is precisely why it functions as a working directory of the neighborhood's mid- and upper-mid market.

History

How it got here.

On 11 May 1969 the Praia do Pinto favela — which had occupied the inland Leblon flat between Av. Bartolomeu Mitre and the General Urquiza axis — caught fire and burned for five days. The cause remains disputed in carioca press to this day. The cleared terreno was subsequently rezoned for a master-planned residential urbanização, the project that became Selva de Pedra.

Construction proceeded through the 1970s. The name was lifted directly from the Globo telenovela 'Selva de Pedra,' which aired during the build-out and gave the project both its branding and a recognizable cultural anchor at delivery.
