Edifício Lellis-São Paulo.

One of the first residential buildings on Avenida Atlântica.

About the building

Edifício Lellis-São Paulo in brief.

Edifício Lellis-São Paulo was one of the first residential buildings on the Copacabana beachfront. Construction began in 1928 on the corner of Av. Atlântica and Rua Barão de Ipanema; the building was inaugurated in 1931 in neoclassical style — the refinement of the architectural detail is what historians cite when they call it the moment the avenue stopped being a stretch of sand and became an address.

The Lellis-São Paulo is a twin-building complex: the first at the Av. Atlântica corner, the second one block back at Rua Domingos Ferreira. Apartments are mid-sized for the avenue, with neoclassical bones and the kind of full-frontal Atlantic view that has drawn residents for nearly a century.

History

How it got here.

Built by merchant Domingos Lellis as a residential investment on what was, in 1928, a still-experimental waterfront. The project was designed by Paulista architect Cristiano Stockler das Neves — a leading neoclassicist of the 1920s São Paulo school who would later serve as mayor of São Paulo — and built across 1928–1931.

The complex was originally delivered with eight floors. A ninth floor was added approximately a decade later, gaining a common terrace at the top of the building. The Lellis-São Paulo is the oldest residential building on Praia de Copacabana.

Dr. Rolando Monteiro — first rector of the Universidade do Distrito Federal (UDF), the institution that would become UERJ — was among the most-cited residents of the Lellis. The building has been continuously residential since delivery and is a recurring fixture of the Copa heritage-stock conversation.
